How to Register as a Halachic Organ Donor

  1. Register online with a local registry
    1. Specify that you only authorize your organs to be used for transplantation and not for research or education.
    2. This is a legally binding directive and does not require the agreement or supervision of your family or rabbi once death has been declared.
  2. Complete our halachic healthcare directive
    1. Instruct your healthcare proxy to donate your organs in accordance with Jewish law.
    2. Discuss with your proxy and rabbi your preferences regarding the halachic definition of death
    3. Under this option, donation occurs only after proxy approval.

FAQs:

Q: What is the halachic criterion for determining brain-stem death?
A: The criterion for “death by neurological criteria” is based on assessing brain-stem function (the area of the brain that controls our breathing), including:

  • Clinical exams (to confirm no response AT ALL to the environment)
  • Apnea tests (to check if the person can breathe on their own)
  • Imaging tests (to confirm absence of blood flow to the brain)

In Israel, these exams are standardized in consultation with the Chief Rabbinate. Through our helpline, Ematai is available to ensure all three tests are performed. The testing is done at least 48 hours after the incident/injury, giving families time to seek guidance.

Q: Does Ematai still issue HODS cards?
A: No, HODS cards are no longer updated or issued. To reflect your preferences, register through one of the methods above and discuss your decision with your family and proxy.

Q: Can I still get a wallet card?
A: Yes! Upload your directive to USACPR for secure storage and receive a wallet card with access details. Discounts are available through Ematai.

Q: Is there an age limit for organ donation?
A: No! A third of organ donors are over 50. Even individuals in their 90s have successfully donated.

Q: Where can I learn more about organ donation in Jewish law?
A: Explore the Option 18 Organ Donation Initiative. Consult with your rabbi for personalized guidance.
